What Wrecks You?

What have you encountered in your life – what problem in the world, what manifestation of the Fall, what dysfunction, what burden of suffering that you have encountered – makes you pound your fist on the table and weep? What wrecks you in such a way that you have to say “That’s it, I can’t stand it no more; I have to do something.”? What gives you a holy discontent?

Why is it so important to identify that? Because, most likely, it wrecks God too! And, most likely, He has planted that ache in you because it is the germinating seed of a particular call He has for you. He gives us these aches (He breaks our hearts in these ways) because they lead us to a mission that He has been equipping us for with all of our life experiences, all of our gifts, our travels, our relationships and our suffering. Holy discontent is one of the most important signs of the beginning of Spirit-lead mission (of a calling). In a lot of ways, it is the key that unlocks our whole purpose on Earth, our whole path of discipleship.

If you don’t know what wrecks you – that’s okay. But please – give the Lord permission to develop it. Ask Him to help you discover it. Let Him wound your heart in this way.

Here is a way to get started. Watch this 40-minute talk in which Bill Hybels (a very respectable pastor from outside of Chicago) unpacks this whole topic. Yes, it’s 40 minutes, but please watch it and let God pierce your heart and speak to your inmost being: “Follow me”.
